Overview

People with diabetes are more likely to have low levels of vitamin C, which can impact blood sugar control and increase the risk of diabetes complications.

Vitamin C is the primary antioxidant found in all the tissues throughout the body. As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C reduces oxidative stress and free radicals, is essential for collagen synthesis, immune function, and overall metabolism.

It must be consumed through diet or supplements as it is not produced by the body.

Recommended Dosage

Consuming 30 to 100 mg/ day supplemented vitamin C results in a steady increase in blood levels of vitamin C. At 200 mg/ day, complete absorption is generally achieved. Higher dosages are not generally required. Once saturation of tissues is achieved, any vitamin C your body doesn’t utilize is excreted in urine.

Potential Side Effects

Vitamin C supplements are generally safe, but some studies show high doses (over 400 mg/day) may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes.

Rapid increases in vitamin C intake can cause diarrhea, which is usually temporary.
