Overview
Gymnema sylvestre is a natural herb, known as “the sugar destroyer” in ancient Indian and Ayurvedic medicine, for both its benefits in reducing sugar cravings and in supporting improvements in blood sugar control.
This herb is loaded with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that provide many benefits.
In terms of sugar cravings, the active compound, called gymnemic acids, has been shown to suppress taste responses to sweet things.
Recommended Dosage
For sugar cravings: Research shows that the effects of the gymnemic acids are transient and last 30-60 minutes, so it is best to take the liquid extract when you have a craving, or before a craving if you know they always hit at a certain time. Squeeze the liquid tincture into a glass of water and drink it, or you can even drop some directly onto the tongue.
To lower blood sugar and prevention of cravings: The dose of supplements taken in randomized controlled trials among people with type 2 diabetes, have used a dosage of 400-500 mg per day. Sometimes it is broken up into several doses throughout the morning and afternoon. It may also be effective to take a dose of the liquid extract right before a large meal to minimize postprandial hyperglycemia.
Potential Side Effects
Gymnema sylvestre is generally considered safe when taken within the recommended dosage range. However, potential side effects may include mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals with underlying health conditions or those taking medications, should consult their healthcare provider before using gymnema sylvestre supplements.
It has been shown to be highly effective in reducing blood glucose, so exercise caution if taking medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas like the glipizide’s Glutcocontrol, Melizide and Glipzide, and gliclazide’s such as Diamicron and Glyade, as these medications already make you more vulnerable to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
