Overview

Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is an essential water-soluble nutrient required for various bodily functions. People with type 2 diabetes are at a higher risk of Vitamin B12 deficiency, which can impact the nervous system, brain, and red blood cell production.

Taking Metformin can lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency, which is the most common medication for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Older adults (65+) also often require additional Vitamin B12.

The body cannot produce B12 and needs to obtain it from food. Vitamin B12 is found only in animal products (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy), making vegetarians and vegans even more susceptible to deficiency and in need of supplementation.

Recommended Dosage

Blood levels below 200 pg/mL are generally considered deficient, while levels above 400 pg/mL are sufficient. Supplementation is recommended for those with levels between 200-400 pg/mL.

Dosing varies depending on deficiency levels but often includes 1-2 mg daily to correct the deficiency.

In some cases mega-dose injections every month are required, depending on how the person responds to supplementation or if there is a severe deficiency.

For neuropathy: studies indicate taking 1000 mcg (micrograms) daily through supplements, especially if you are deficient.

Potential Side Effects

There is no set upper limit for Vitamin B12, and supplementation is generally safe.
