Overview

Calcium is a vital mineral primarily associated with healthy bones and teeth. However, it’s needed for many critical functions so adequate intake is needed, or the body draws calcium out of bones.

Calcium plays crucial roles in cell signalling, muscle contraction, blood clotting, nerve function, and metabolism. For people with type 2 diabetes, maintaining balanced calcium levels is essential, as both high and low levels can significantly impact blood sugar control and pancreatic health.

Recommended Dosage

The recommended daily intake for calcium is 1000 mg per day for men and 1200 mg per day for women. It is best to consume calcium through food sources such as dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and seafood.

If supplementation is necessary, follow the dosage recommended by your healthcare provider. Calcium supplements come in two forms: calcium carbonate (take with food) and calcium citrate.

Potential Side Effects

Calcium supplements can cause gas, bloating, or constipation. Splitting the dose throughout the day may alleviate these symptoms. Excessive calcium intake can lead to hypertension, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.
