Diagnosed With Prediabetes and Unsure What to Do
“I have always eaten relatively well, at least, what I thought was eating well.”
Like many people, Cheryl believed she was following healthy eating advice.
“But, like most people, for most of my life I thought that fat was to be avoided and carbs should be eaten in unlimited portions.”
Despite trying countless diets over the years, Cheryl never felt satisfied.
“I have always been overweight. I have always wanted to lose weight. I have always been hungry. And there was never a time that my body would say, ‘enough food.”
“In other words, I have struggled a lot with the “supposed” healthy diet recommendations, and over the years I have been on every diet known to man.”
Then her doctor told her she had prediabetes.
Her A1c was 6.1%.
Looking for Answers Beyond “Cut Back on Sugar”
Her doctor advised her to “cut back on sugar” and prescribed 1000mg metformin every day. Then he sent her home – that was it!
But Cheryl quickly realized she still didn’t know what that actually meant.
“I didn’t know what it meant to be prediabetic or what ‘cutting back on sugar’ meant.”
She immersed herself in research, reading diabetes books and learning as much as she could. Although she understood the science, she still had one practical question.
“How do I actually eat???”
Then she discovered us here and joined as a Member.
“I was so excited because DMP agreed with everything I had read and all of my research. I knew that I needed help and here it was.”
Finding an Approach She Could Actually Follow
Like many people, Cheryl didn’t change everything overnight.
“I really didn’t start completely eating the new way for a few months after being diagnosed. I know that seems like a long time, but it does take time to change everything.”
Instead, she gradually built new habits and found meals that worked for both her and her husband.
“The recipes have helped me find foods to eat that both my husband and I like.”
“Overall, making the transition has been much easier than I thought it would be.”
Plus, she shared that having the right resources and support made all the difference.
“One thing I realized is there are lots of books and “so called” experts who will give you very bad advice. I even know of one national organization that promote incorrect guidelines.”
“The bottom line is this: You have to do your research. Becoming a DMP member is a great way to get the information (and practical steps) you need to get on track.
“The nutritionists on this website have done their homework and know what they’re talking about!”

One Year Later: No Longer Prediabetes
Just one year after changing the way she ate, Cheryl’s results were remarkable.
Her A1c had fallen from 6.1% to 5.6%, bringing it back into the normal range.
She had lost 21 pounds (9.5 kg) – something she had been trying to do for years, and never could!
Her cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure had all returned to healthy levels.
The reaction from her cardiologist was something she’ll never forget.
“After looking at my numbers, he actually did a little dance!”
“My cardiologist is so happy he doesn’t want to see me for a year.”
She shared that everyone in the office celebrated her success.
“I bet in one year they don’t have many patients who have experienced such a major transition as I have had.”
“Everyone was so ecstatic, I left that office high as a kite!”
The Biggest Change Was How Cheryl Felt
Although Cheryl was thrilled with her blood test results, the biggest surprise was how different everyday life felt.
“My life is very different now than it was before I started this way of eating.”
“Maybe the biggest change is that I am not hungry all the time and I don’t crave sweets, which is revolutionary because I lived with these feelings my entire life.”
Instead of constantly thinking about food, she finally felt satisfied.
“All it takes now is just a slice of cheese for a snack and I’m actually satisfied.”
“It still amazes me.”
She also realized her success wasn’t about having extraordinary willpower.
“People think I have a ton of will power.”
“I don’t.”
“I’m just not being led by my blood sugar going up and down all the time. It’s steady now and I feel that I am in control of my hunger and blood sugar.”

Years Later: Prediabetes Reversed, Still Maintaining Results
Many people can improve their blood sugar for a few months. Maintaining those improvements is the real challenge, and that’s something we help our members achieve – long term sustainable results!
When Cheryl checked back in later, she had even more good news to share.
“My A1c was 5.5!”
“My doctor had told me that if I could keep my A1c under 5.7 for a year he would take me off metformin.”
“So… I’m off metformin.”
Her prediabetes was in remission. She reversed prediabetes and avoided a type 2 diabetes diagnosis!
Cheryl also noticed several unexpected improvements, sharing:
- “I no longer experience tingling in my hands and feet.”
- “My blood pressure and triglycerides are normal.”
- “I no longer have UTI’s.”
- I’ve lost weight, and I feel better.”
- “My constant hunger and sweet cravings have disappeared”
- “I feel healthier and more energetic”
Cheryl’s Advice for Anyone Newly Diagnosed Prediabetes
Looking back, Cheryl believes taking the time to learn about her condition made all the difference.
“The bottom line is this: You have to do your research.“
She also encourages people to monitor their blood sugar, something she learned how to do being a member, because seeing the impact of food can be incredibly motivating.
“I think if there is one bit of advice I would give to someone who needs to stay motivated to eat correctly, it would be to get a blood sugar monitor and use it.”
“You will know that you are in control.”
“What you eat makes all the difference and it will be reflected in the number you see each day on your monitor.”
Taking control of your health is a valuable and empowering thing.
“I can honestly say, getting the diagnosis of prediabetes has actually changed my life for the better. I know I am not struggling with cholesterol or weight anymore and it’s such a relief. Take control and live a full life.”
