Overview
Aloe vera is considered a ‘functional food’ due to its physiological effects that combat chronic diseases and metabolic disorders, making it beneficial for managing type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.
Aloe vera contains over 75 bioactive compounds that work in sync to promote health. It is rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory fatty acids, along with anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-obesity properties. It also contains potent enzymes, laxative compounds and even hormones.
Recommended Dosage
For both aloe vera gel or juice, follow the dosage instructions on the manufacturer’s label.
Start with a small dose and increase slowly to avoid abdominal upset or diarrhea.
Potential Side Effects
Aloe vera may cause abdominal upset or diarrhea due to its laxative effects.
It may also interact with diabetes-specific medications, Sevoflurane (Ultane), stimulant laxatives, Warfarin (Coumadin), and diuretic medications.
Monitor blood glucose levels closely to avoid hypoglycemia, especially if taking insulin and sulfonylureas, which already put you at increased risk of hypoglycemia.
