Overview

Navigating the world of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes can often feel like a journey set on a predetermined path, heavily reliant on medications. However, over the next four episodes of Type 2 Diabetes Talk, we’re about to embark on a different journey, a more empowering route.

At the heart of this ‘Medication March’ series is the concept of personal empowerment. As we challenge the traditional medication-first mindset, we endeavor to open up a conversation about alternatives that put you in the driver’s seat of your own health journey. This is a series that invites you into a dialogue about taking charge of your diabetes management.

The series begins with a story that resonates with many: feeling unheard in a healthcare system that often prioritizes prescription over patient-specific needs.

Imagine being in Dean’s shoes: He was told by his doctor that his diabetes would inevitably worsen and he’d eventually die from diabetes, full stop. This prognosis could have been a sentence to a life governed by negativity, depression and increasing dosages of medication, but Dean chose to challenge this narrative.

We openly discuss how people often feel pressured into a medication-only approach to diabetes treatment, the resistance people face from healthcare providers when opting for a less medication-focused approach, and the common thread of feeling unheard and unsupported.

These stories are shared not to discourage, but to prepare and empower you to have informed discussions with your healthcare team. As you listen to Dean’s journey and others like it on the podcast, it’s time for us all to challenge the common narratives, to think about diabetes differently. Let’s lead a transformative approach to diabetes treatment, one where patient empowerment is at the forefront.

And as we move through parts 2, 3 and 4 of the ‘Medication March’ series, we’ll speak to guests regarding medications, challenging the standard medication-centric approach to diabetes treatment, explore evidence about diabetes medications, and most importantly, empower you with education, informed decision-making, and effective communication so that you can take full charge of your diabetes health.

This series is all about ensuring:

>> You realize you’re not alone in the challenges you may face with healthcare professionals and the healthcare system.

>> You have the information and knowledge about diabetes medications that you need to make informed decisions.

>> You know how to have meaningful dialogue with your doctor and foster a collaborative relationship that actually leads to better health outcomes for you.

>> You become your own best advocate and take charge of your diabetes health.

Please get involved in this conversation!

Share your thoughts, experiences and leave your comments on any of the Medication March episodes, leave us a voice message or send an email with your questions.

Together we can change the narrative and change the way we approach diabetes treatment. Together we can make a difference!
